Help - cheapest/simplest stand alone way to make clips

Post by heisthl »

What the cheapest thing I can get that I can stick on my bench to record MP3 clips w/backing tracks. It has to be simple (1 button to press would be ideal). I would probably give it a SM57 thru a tube mic preamp signal. I don't want a laptop on my bench and I don't want to carry amps to my computer. If all I had to do was hit record while I was tweaking I would be posting clips.

This looked like a good value. I have no personal experience with these units.

Looks like it records in wav format so you would still need to convert it to mp3.

Yes but at least it will get recorded, and I can dump it to a USB stick to convert on the computer later. I'll let you know how it works - If its a turkey I can still probably unload it for that price, shipping was free.

Check out the little Zoom H2. I have one and it's a pretty darned good little recorder. Not exactly THE cheapest route but close to it.

Yeah, it records to WAV. I have the version that uses the flash card. With a 1 gig card it has ok recording time, but wish I had gotten the HD version, of course I got mine ultra cheap so its still viable. If your using a windows machine Audacity is a free program that will convert to MP3 and does a great job, just a option. I think you'll like the machine, I did a few early demo's of our band, 2 of which we still use and I just went with a mixer into 2 ch stereo live. Added a little verb and it sounds real good.

The only problem with that solution that I can see is you can't listen to a backing track while you record.

Everybody has an iPod don't they?

Cool products:

This $59 device has a line in in case the mic sucks and may be great for your live club recordings. Probably use the line in from the board feed live or a small mic preamp at home:

My sis recorded this with that attached mic at a gig I do every Saturday after Thanksgiving. I did my first gig with these guys when I was 14! We play about 2 times a year in small town Iowa for benefits and such - with no rehearsal & it shows. These guys were high school class of '69. All much older than me

Henry,
Just reread the description for your device. Lots of bang for your buck there!! I see they are now all gone. That should work great - just transfer to your desktop machine through usb and convert.
