Running two amps

Post by angelodp »

What is the best technique to run two amps. Each amp having its own speakers. I have a simple A/B box but its a tone sucker. I want to include my D'lator w/ my D'lite and my Rocket amp.

A simple A/B shouldn't change anything, but it might have a resistor
in it to reduce the switch pop, could be some thing to check. An A/B/Y will
cut the input impedance in half and could effect tone. The length of the patch
cords you use to make your set up work can have a real effect, the capacitance
changes with length, get better cables or use shorter patches. Another thing to try is to use (or build) a line driver to reduce the effect of cable length.
I ran two amp for a while with a morley aby, wasn't too bad, but I built the
amps with 2.2M resistors on the input instead of the typical 1M.

Do you want to switch between them? I've seen some players daisy chain two amps together and run one clean and one dirty for a wider, more complex sound. You have to have more than one input, though.

I wonder what setup Joe Bonamassa runs? He uses four amps. I think his Marshall Silver Jubilee is on all the time, but he switches the others in and out.

I'm using a Lehle Little Dual to switch between an Express and a Liverpool.

I love this A/B/Y box.

Sonny,

Joe uses a Whirlwind Selector A/B/Y to split his guitar signal. From there, A goes to the Silver Jubilee and B goes to a Lehle 1@3 splitter which allows him to select any of the other three amps (Van Weelden, Carol Ann, Two-Rock) that mates with the Jubilee signal for true stereo.

Do you know if he runs the Jubilee clean, semi-dirty, or what?

Thanks,
Dave

Does the Lihle have a phase switch and transformer? Is it a buffered pedal?

Lehle looks like the one to get

Post by angelodp »

Thanks for the input ( no pun ), the Lehle sure looks like the way to go, if a bit pricey. I spent some time playing with my Radial AB/Y and its pretty quiet but it does seem to compress things a bit and diminish the levels. I used my D'lator ( D'lite side ) and the Q'Verb ( on the Rocket side ) to up the levels again. Sure is hard to beat the purity of these amps without anything in the chain.

It works great, no compromise, transparent and extremely well built...

Check out the 1-in 3-out buffered splitter on this page:
http://www.muzique.com/lab/splitter.htm

If you build that, but use a small Nichicon 10k/10k audio transformer (from Mouser) on each output (with only one of those 3 trannies secondary connected to ground), you can run 3 amps with no signal or tone loss or ground loop hum. I build buffers that way for my amp clients.

You can get the stripboards from the diystompboxes store, and put the whole thing in a BB sized enclosure. Small Bear Electronics has nice ones that come powder coated in cool colors.

Of course, for lots more space, time and money, you could build an all tube buffered splitter......

Dave,

I'm not sure how Joe runs the Jubilee, but here's more from the horse's mouth:
