Pin 1,2,3 and 4 are there to make a connection. The groundlug is primarily there to shield the plug.
So if you want to be sure to have a solid connection, use the connectors, and not only the shield.
This means you have to connect ground to a connector (pin 1) on both male and female connector.
Depending on the plug used, you could get away with just the housing for ground, but it is more reliable to use a connector (also).
If you use only the housing, and your plugs can make a solid connection with the housing of the plugs, the metal housing had to be present ( The plug needs to be assembled) for this to work.
But with 3 unused connectors, why not use one for ground?
