anyone ever heard this type of sound from an amp?

Post by wsaraceni »

amp is a brand new to me, 26 year old, 2 channel dual rectifier (rev f...serial 692)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_cont ... A0DMxA4HUw

it happens with multiple guitars, cables, speakers, etc.

replacing all preamp tubes doesnt make a difference.

has kt66 output tubes that came with it but ive ordered a set of mesa 6l6 tubes as ive heard the kt66 can strain the transformers (no idea of thats true)

the sound goes away 100%. its also 100% silent when the guitar input cable is unplugged

the sound does not change in any mode, or any EQ. only the volume of the noise changes with gain and master knobs.

when the guitar volume knob is on zero its louder. when its on full it's sometimes louder but not always.

Either power tubes or a cap job is needed

Some gut shots too. I don’t think a cap job would be too bad.

Is that the only sound the amp makes or does it make music?

Those three smaller electyrolytic cap get very physically leaky and you would see stains on the PCB from them.

Sounds great otherwise. The smaller ones you are talking about are the blue ones and one orange one or are there smaller ones you are referring to?

Yup the small two blue and one orange.

In many different production amps those small ecaps leak like crazy in Marshall reverb positions and Marshall bais circuits.

I’m debating if I try to do this on my own or if I bring it in to a tech. I think if I rake all of the controls off the front panel
It’ll be pretty easy to get to the bottom of the board. The two blue caps on the other board look to be the hardest to replace. I suppose I should replace them all as well. Mesa sells their own branded caps right on their website so I can keep it close to factory original.

I think your new 6L6 tubes will cure this noise.

Cure was even dumber than new tubes.

The room where my gear is is far from my wireless router. I have an Apple TV that had trouble getting WiFi. I installed one of those Ethernet over powerline adapters and forgot about it. So I have a perfect rev f 1992 dual rec I paid $650 for plus new tubes.
