Is a dumble something for me?

Post by Roe »

As most norwegians, I've never tried a dumble - just a bruno. I like the bruno clean sound, and would perhaps like to build a dumblish amp if it can get me in the ballpark.

What I'd like is:
clean headroom
punchy mids
good cleans, and a little crunch or distortion. not much.
not much compression or sag.
a quick attack.

my favorite amps are:
marshall - (super) bass/PAs, jtm45/50/100s
fender blonde bassman 6g6b
blackface super reverb
tweed bassman

should I build a dumble type amp? which circuit? 6l6s or el34s?

Listen to some of the clips on this forum. If that singing smooth overdrive captures your ear, then a Dumble is for you.

Sounds like what you want. I'd use 6L6's, at least to start. Keep your volts on the high side of the ranges you see here. 440-460 minimum. Amps with lower volts can sound good but for that great headroom you want to keep the power amp from adding a lot of opinions. The components are pretty well researched and I recommend you stay with those. If you have the cabs of the amps you listed, try the amp over those before you make up your mind about buying more speakers. You may not find an exact match for the tone you want but you'll certainly get a trend to narrow the field.

Cheers, Skip

No,

I prefer the clean sound. perhaps a SSS or a winterland would be better for me.
