Express caps and transformers

Post by cap217 »

I'm new here but I am getting a Tw clone from Cieratone and he uses 6ps caps and can use tad mustard for an upcharge. He also can use upgraded transformers (not recommend).

What caps should I have him use?

I also have the option of transformerless and can add my own. What would i get?

Any other advice on the build or if I should do something different?

Why not source from various members here selling items? Allyn recently had a chassis and transformer run. He is an excellent guy to buy from.

If you don't have the skills to build one yourself, why don't you ask one of the guys here to build one for you? I think you'd get a better product...

Someone else posted a thread asking for a build and prices were steep. Now I am willing to pay but for my first step in, cheaper is easier. After I find out what I am looking for in an amp, I would source a build.

For now it seems that I will go with ceiratone chassis and soldered board and get the xformers from here (correct ones). What else should I do?

And what caps????

Allyn sells transformers and chassis. The prices are great and the shipping doesn't screw your budget. Just a thought.

Caps? Just do a search on here. People like lots of things.

You didn't say which Trainwreck model amp your building and to me that makes a big difference in cap choice. You cannot get what was originally used in TW amps very easily anymore so need to find which available cap choice will work with the model TW amp your building.

I have a limited number of Mallory CDE PVC caps left and actually not enough to complete the tone board. I sold a complete set recently to a tag member leaving not many.

I've used so many different caps for TW builds M150's, 6PS, and mojotone Dijon. I tend to use 6PS for Rocket build and M150's or Dijon for Liverpool and Express builds because they are a more high gain Marshall type amp in my opinion.

Some builders have used STK caps with good results.

Going to probably go with Dana Hall. Paul Ruby is another good one to go with. Thanks for everything on here!

I will make a post when I get it.

I used to use TAD mustards. I've taken them out of all my builds. Very shrill and unrefined to my ears. There are lots of better options, 6ps among them.

This is interesting. I heard that some like PIO caps in a rocket to tame the harshnes. Im not sure though bc the rocket and clones used the orange drops or Mallorys.

I am having an Express built by Dana and he is using all original parts (Mallory PVC). But I also am getting a Liverpool by MK and he used Mallory 150's. I know that wasnt the correct cap but is it worth considering changing them out? He said he uses what sounds best during the build. I take his word for it...

short answer, no don't change the caps.... the PVC's are good... better in this circuit

I wouldnt change the mallory pvc ones in the express.

I am asking about the mallory 150's in the liverpool. I read a lot about them not sounding as good as the orange drops can in these amps but I also read that they tame the high end. I am sure the builder did it for a reason but I always want to tweak stuff!
