They use a local anesthetic which is usually Lidocaine.

My wife and I both made the mistake of going to a chain dentist (assembly line CCCP Kommunist Bloc style ) about a year ago (gotta love "insurance" these days...would have been better off out of network and out of pocket  ). We had a very unpleasant experience. They shot us both up with too much Lidocaine too fast and I broke out in an instant cold sweat, it was a very visceral (and very unnerving) reaction. My heart rate doubled. I was involuntarily shaking rather badly and drooled WTF did they do to me and almost got up and went off on the nearest MFker when I came back down. Our current dentist (very good!) explained that they were in too much of a hurry and should never have done that.

In my spare time I've been know to work on people's teeth from home with my DIY dent-a-kit from Ceriatone. The pain only lasts around a couple hours after the procedure and if you're worried about the flesh eating rash on the lower portion of your face, don't worry, it's normal and happens to all my patients and should be gone within a couple weeks, that is, if you still have a face by then. Most regrow their face in due time.

Come on by for a free checkup!

I had a great dentist for many years Dr. McNutt he was an old Navy guy so we talked about vets and the military a lot. He did such good work, sadly no longer with us. RIP Wes.

I am originally from Staten Island, NY. I never patronized him but there used to be a dentist there named Dr. Yankowitz. I kid you not

Then there's Dr. Fang DDS, from one of the obscurer Pink Floyd album covers. I just googled Fang DDS, there's hundreds of 'em!

edit: semi failed memory, upon research it was Mr. W R Phang, dental surgeon, and was part of the original cover of "A Nice Pair". Apparently Mr Phang objected "as dentists are not allowed to advertise". In later editions that photo was replaced by a gargling monk.
