Sound Clip: Express Clone does Journey

Post by GEN DAWG »

Okay, hate on Journey all you want, but I love this song. This was recorded with my Esquire through an Express clone. The head was running through an Avatar cab loaded with a Weber Thames (ceramic). No pedals, no verb, etc.; just rolled up my volume knob for the lead. Both the clean and lead tracks were recorded with an SM57 on the speaker and an Avantone ribbon mic about head level, maybe 3 feet away. See what you think.

Thanks, Mike. My playing on the clean part is about B- / C+, but I'm happy with the lead.

FYI, I confirmed that this amp was built by Fusionbear. Nice job, Carl!

That solo was spot on! Great job!

Funny Journey story, a few months ago they came to my town. My girlfriend wanted to go however I tried to ignore her requests. The day of the concert, I went online and checked for tickets. Nothing available. I tried again several times throughout the day, nothing. Around 4PM I gave it one last try. FRONT ROW came up! I snatched up two tickets! The GF was very happy! Fast forward to the concert, guitarist Neil Schon saw me sitting there in the front with a bored look on my face so he stuck his tongue out at me, we both broke out laughing! I have to say, those Journey guys have a LOT of hits and they know their material very well.

Thanks, BIG Dave. It's funny, everyone slags on Journey, but it does take quite a bit of talent to put together the kind of pop / rock tunes they did. And Neil can play, period.

Wow, there used to be a lot more replies in this thread. I guess the mods are practicing revisionist history now?

By the way, I played this amp at church for Easter Sunday. We did a fired-up version of "Can't No Grave Hold My Body Down," for which I used my beloved Les Paul. The tone was so satisfying, that I just could not stop smiling. Got to rip a big, loud guitar solo with it -- we don't get fussed at for being loud on Easter -- and it was one of the more satisfying playing experiences of my life. Two thumbs up for this amp.
