DIY VTL5C1 opto switch which LDR is adequate to this use ?

Post by Kagliostro »

I want to build some opto switch and want to go on the cheap without sacrificing good performance

the method is the usual, an LDR a Led and a little piece of heat shrink tube

this is the datasheet of the VTL5C1

http://www.alliedelec.com/Images/Produc ... 219695.pdf

which will be the characteristics required to an LDR to be adequate for the VTL5C1 substitution ?

have someone experimented this thing and have an LDR model to report ?

which is the best LED to be used (red wite yellow green blue) ?

Many thanks for any advice

The main characteristics when used as a switch would be the max (dark) and min (max LED current) resistance. What's adequate of depends on what circuit you will be using.

in the meantime I got some news

the LDR as to be like a VTL5C1 must have

200ohm when full illumined

50Mohm when full dark

so now I'm looking for one with this spec and easy to be find

Very few circuits require those specific properties. A 100 on / 5 M off might work fine too. A 1K on 500K off might also. Depends on the circuit.

I'm confused, why not use the Vactrol especially the 5c1? Maybe what $3.50 ? Depending on the qty.... It would be really difficult to slap together anything that will work as well at any price.

Don't forget though if selling a product if it matters to you they can not be used on any new equipment in EU, they are not Rohs and not exempt.

The price here is ~€ 5.68 = $ 7.64 each

and if I can save money ..................

Someone told me that he bought some Tesla 3WK 163 40 that are direct correspondent for the VTL5C1 for near € 1.50 each

but I'm not able to find it and the same the person who told me about them

---------

about the mix of LDR & LED, I don't see where is the problem about safety, if the single components follow the rules, putting them together in a circuit doesn't make them to become out law

I have some Perkins-Elmer ones in stock
Standard number VTL5C and not sure last #, but I'm out of town until March 5th
and I will post the part number when I return.

But I can sell these at $2.50ea and they are new surplus

Can't help you with a LDR model number because the two very readily available here have different specs to what you're quoting. But I've used LDRs and LEDs a few times now in optical compressor circuits. On/off signal switching will be easier than that. I used a square standard brightness yellow LED which super glues nicely straight onto the face of the LDR. Then encase the unit in heatshrink. Works really well. You don't need high brightness LEDs to get the LDR to go low resistance.

Unless you just want that kind of construction, take a look at this part number on Mouser. A Little more expensive, but there are two switches on each device. Choices of 2-NO, 2-NC, or 1-NO and 1-NC. Uses the same technology you are looking at.

Thanks for the info

but I'm not sure if those electronic relays can be used for audio signals

the VTL5C1 and the LED + LDR I'm sure will work
