volume control question....probably something silly

Post by yalesmith »

I finished a tweed (5es) a while ago and something always bothered me about that build. when i turn the volume (both) all the way off i can still hear my guitar. I am not sure if this is acceptable, if not, what can i do about it?

Thanks

The volume pot wipers might not actually reach ground, or perhaps more likely there is some coupling through the power supply to the next stage. The current draw from the first stage is still being modulated even if the output signal is grounded-out (volume at zero). That means a modulated supply voltage for the stage after the volume control, which creates enough of a signal at the plate to be heard.

Turn both pots to zero and you'll get no sound.

The volume pots are interactive and no independent of each other on the 5E3 design.

Just to pretend to be a smart-ass, on Earth why would you turn both of the volumes to zero?

Probably just some bleed through of the signal.

But I thought I read before that it can mean a poor ground somewhere on the stack.
Might not pertain to this amp though....

And Don does have a point, Deluxe amps should only be played one way, loud.
