caps etc.
I have a small stash of NOS .022uF/600V Vitamin Q I could provide 3 of. Cost me $11 each but, all in the cause of tone....
If you want to try some Black Gates in cathode bypass, I have some BG NX Hi Q 22uF/6.3V and type N 1.0uf/50V. Highly regarded lowest noise audiophool stuff. Usually have N in .1 and .47uF but currently out of stock.
I have a few BG type VK power caps 22uF/350V too, if they would figure in this project.
PM me.
I've been using PRP General Purpose (GP) 1W metal films for about 3 years, and I have also been looking for a new supply of PRS resistors. Dave West's is too limited and they are GP, not the new PR9372 specific audio design metal films. Michael Percy only has a few PRPs so far. I did get some samples from PRP like rfgordon did, their distributor in Phoenix is already bugging me about them!
Also have a bunch of NOS CDE Black Cat mylar film/foil coupling caps, I almost forgot about those.

Anyone try these? CCF60
I think they sound great and are easier to read in a build

1 W PRP...
here, from a great guy. Also, try the Sonicaps as couplers: just might change your mind about polypropylene.

The Mills are great as grid resistors.

Sorry for the double post... I thought I turned on my Echoplex but it was this instead

Resistors
I've used the Mills before. Inadvertently blew one, but I had put it in a power supply line, which was probably not a good idea. It blew because I exceeded the 400V limit, not its power capacity. The other one I put in was further down the line, below 400V and survived nicely. I was interested to see if the reduced inductance might make any audible difference. Grid resistor is a much better application!
The Vishay CC60s look interesting. The PRP's only downside is they ARE hard to read. Where does one get the CC60s and how much are they?

Re: Resistors
The voltage rating is across the resistor, where did you put it to get that across? A bleeder resistor?David Root wrote:I've used the Mills before. CCF60 you mean?
Mouser has them in stock

Re: 27 resistors = $69
The Mills was a 10K between the screen choke and the PI, so, no, it didn't have 400V across it. I don't recall the details, but in looking at my final schematic that resistor is now a 6K 2W with about 60V across it. However, I was having trouble in the reverb driver at that time, which turned out to be a missed unconnected reverb driver cathode ground wire. Which is why I now connect each ground wire as I put them in rather than put in all the ground wires and then connect them!
CCF 60s, my mistake. I just got my new Mouser catalog last week, will check them out, thanx for the tip.

pm'ed u david.
CCF60 are great, and are included in this shootout. Mesa uses them alot.

Your first statement may be true. Your second statement does NOT convince me!lastwinj wrote:pm'ed u david.

I've yet to find a Mesa tone that I really like live. They record well (well, some of them). But I've never heard one in person that I found inspiring.
Just my opinion...
Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...

agreed. was only pointing out that they were being used in a production amp.

Hey Jeremy,
I hope you could tell that my post, while true, was mostly tongue-in-cheek.
I look forward very much to your test results/opinions.
Thanks,
Michael

Re: 27 resistors = $69
To be fair to Mesa, CCF60s may be the best at their price point, I can't say, haven't used them, and it depends on your design anyway, IMO. I guess we'll find out in Jeremy's shoot-out.
I've even used el cheapo Xicon carbon film 1/2W in one amp and it sounds great, BUT it was a very simple circuit and I used Mercury Magnetics iron and a nice vintage style Weber speaker, which I'm sure has more to do with it.

Re: 27 resistors = $69
Were there ever any results posted from this shootout?
Re: 27 resistors = $69
Yeah, but results were inconclusive because no one could hear the difference between a $5 or 5 cent resistor.
Kidding. I wonder if it was worth it?
