Clubman tonestack

Hi, I have an amp set up like a Clubman - sounds big with KT66s but the highs are a little too much and I have to use the cut almost full on to smooth it out some. My speaker is an alnico ToneTubby in an openback cab. The tone stack is strange to me and before I tear it out do you think a TMB would help? I have built a Chieftain and had the same issue until I took out the bright cap of the volume control. I know of a guy who built a Clubman type amp and also complained it was too bright. He also took out the bright cap and liked it much better that way. So I would try that first before modifying the tone stack and making an entirely different amp out of it.

I built an SEL with a KT88, and it also had too much hi-end harmonics when driven. I put in a conjunctive filter on the OT, and it turned out to be an excellent switched option.

You might want to put that bright cap on a switch as you might find you'll miss it. Very easy to find 1M push pulls. My lightning clone is also very bright, I decided to put a 3 way switch 47/100/180pf. I discovered that the amp looses all it's sparkle when you switch even to 100pf. These are very successful designs for good reasons, maybe best to play with different speakers first, as I will have to but $$$. I'll probably just use the Celestions Matchless uses and maybe I'll just hit it right the first time.

Thanks all, I dropped the cap on the Master Vol. to 150p and like it better than without a cap but still- ouch. Tom, yes that is the schematic.

I disconnected the first tube (12ax7) ,ran the guitar
into the 6sj7 and implemented the RAW control from Tubeswell's *modified BFDR * posting. I go from the 6sj7 with no tone controls into the PI. For now I like it but I may try a Route 66 tonestack after the 6sj7 later.

just as an aside about the clubman schematic that's been on the net for a while, the coupling caps entering the p.i. are .01uf---not .1uf as the schematic states. there's a pretty good pic of this on the pro guitar site. i'd say there's probably another value or two in there that's not totally correct as well. rh

i think that might be one of the not totally correct items it's hard to follow matchless builds for sure from pics but i didn't see that in there anywhere. i'd be nice to find someone with a real one willing to sus out the circuit correctly and flesh out the schematic.

also don't know what you used for the pentode second stage, but looks like the plate resistor is 330k, the screen is 2.2m, the cath. is 2.2k, and it also looks like the input to the pentode grid from the treb. control is padded down by a 100k resistor to ground. i'm guessing they used an ef86.
it would also appear the plate resistor for the paralleled sections 1st tube is 18k. rh
