Allen ... Brown Sugar & Old Flame
I think if I do a 2nd kit build it might be one of these two amps. Anybody ever built one ... ever heard one ... or have an opinion on them. They seem to be interesting takes on Tweed, Brown and Black Face Fender features.

I bought a couple of transformers from him. The OT made a major sonic improvement for the cranked tone. The PT works as advertized.
Re: Allen ... Brown Sugar & Old Flame
I don't know anything about the Allen amps, but they interest me more than any other currently-built "boutique amp" (are Allens considered boutique?).
I do know that I've liked every brown Fender I've ever tried, among which was an excellent Deluxe, an unbelievably loud Concert, and a couple of others. They seemed much "wilder" than my Blackface and Silverface amps. I've often thought that if I were to build an amp to "play" (i.e. crank up and down, especially up
), I'd probably use the reverse-control brown Fender power amp. It's very aggressive.
If Allen makes them anything like the originals, his amps should be something.
Regards, Bill.

I don't have the layout for the Brown Sugar and need to see that one.
The other layouts all seem to be the same with maybe a Raw control added and have dwell knob on the reverb.

Do a Sweet Spot. Forget about tweed, these things don't do tweed. They're tweaked BF circuits.doveman wrote:I think if I do a 2nd kit build it might be one of these two amps. BF Fenders sound lame after a steady diet of Trainbwrecks.
I believe in this and it's tested by research...

His iron is Heyboer to his design or standard Magnetic Components. I have used both, both are good.

I'm not sure how long that's been there. That's a good site to keep an eye on, though.

Thanks ... nice compliment. I do play the D'Lite and love the way it sounds. Occasionally, I get a bit of the bug that I might want to build another flavor amp (you guys know this feeling). Usually, it passes when I play the Brown Note ... it fits me pretty well.ampmike wrote:Hey Doveman,Love your music,I thought you played all BN stuff,You got me to get a kit just from listening to your musicThanx MJ
I was researching tweed amps like the 5E3 when I ran across the Brown Sugar. I found it most interesting since it weems to be a combination of tweed, brown, and black face elements. I would miss the master volume (big fan of master volume). That's one reason I thought about the Old Flame ... which seems to be a Super Reverb (one of my favorites but never owned one) with a master volume ... and the raw might give it a bit of tweed/brown action. The clips are good on the Allen site.
I have talked myself out of a build bug ... but remain curious. Especially about the Brown Sugar. So I would still be interested in the builders here ... comments on that attached layout ... what do you think?

I think its Mojo tone that is selling their version of the 5E3 chassis for $23 it has some extra holes. If it wasn't for their outragious shipping cost I would have ordered a few to have on hand.
