Sources for Heyboer HTS-9144?
I've been looking for a couple of 9144's for some Rocket fun. I see the 5199s around, but not the 9144. Are most people just going with the 5199 these days for their Rocket builds?
Re: Sources for Heyboer HTS-9144?
If you're in the US, order them from Heyboer. They prefer the distributor business model, but have no issues selling direct. They don't stock this stuff. It's all made to order, so it can take a while.
[edit] btw, the HTS-9144 is not the correct heyboer power transformer for the Rocket. The HTS-5199 is.

Re: Sources for Heyboer HTS-9144?
Which one is the 9144?
Does this PT have two Hi-V's or just the lower value one?
Thanks

I figured that would be the case, but thought I'd ask before I went that route.
The 9144 is 280/250/0/250/280.GrungeMan wrote:Which one is the 9144?

The 5199 is 300/260/0/260/300.
Re: Sources for Heyboer HTS-9144?
Hi jay, just saw your edit. I believe that's incorrect. As per Allyn, the correct PT is the HTS-9144. He's been in the real deal and says it's spot on.jaysg wrote:

The 5199 is the Express OT, the 9144 is the Rocket OT.
The 9144 has the lower voltages to align with the Dynaco 470 that KF used as I understand it....

Ron - I thought it was decided that the 280-250-250-280 Pacific iron was not historically or typically correct for either build? I seem to recall that Allyn did try the 280 tap for a Rocket and a particular customer but it was an experiment.
I mean, when you look at it, if the 300-260-260-300 PT is not meant for the Rocket, why even have the 260 taps? Does someone here make an Express using the 260 taps?

Most people stall out when fixing a mistake that they've made. Why?
Re: Sources for Heyboer HTS-9144?
The 260V taps on the Heyboer 5199 are for the Liverpool.rooster wrote: I mean, when you look at it, if the 300-260-260-300 PT is not meant for the Rocket, why even have the 260 taps? Does someone here make an Express using the 260 taps?
The 9144 is Heyboer iron, not Pacific iron.
There appears to be a difference between how Heyboer and Pacific rate their PT iron.
Heyboer=no (low) load with 120V input (higher output voltage ratings)
Pacific=loaded with 117V input (slightly lower output voltage ratings)
Read this thread https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=10187
and this one:
https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... sc&start=0
To sum up, as I understand it (and please, someone correct me ifin I got it wrong):
Heyboer 5199 is rated 300-260-0-260-300
Or better yet, HV-LV-0-LV-HV
HV taps for Express, LV taps for Liverpool
Pacific 25475 is rated at 280-250-0-250-280
Or better yet, HV-LV-0-LV-HV
HV taps for Express, LV taps for Liverpool
HOWEVER, the output for both PTs appear to be the same for both HV and LV taps under the same input voltage and output load conditions.
Back to the Rocket. Conversely, and very confusingly, the Heyboer 9144 is rated at 280-250-0-250-280. But that is with higher input voltage and no (or low) load so it has a lower output than the what-would-seem-to-be-the-same Pacific 25475.

Re: Sources for Heyboer HTS-9144?
I am in agreement with you Gearhead and have done the actual voltage measurements on the HTS-9144, HTS-5199, and the Pacific 25475 to confirm this. I used ~120 volts of AC input for all three of these measurements and had a small load that drew a few milliamps of current for each measurement.gearhead wrote:... Back to the Rocket. HTS-9144 = 280-250-0-250-300 volts
HTS-5199 = 300-260-0-260-300 volts
25475 = 301-263-0-263-301 volts
Ron Worley has confirmed for us that the HTS-9144 is "The" Rocket power transformer and these measurements tell us that it is slightly different than the HTS-5199. For the purist, the HTS-9144 is the right one. It also uniquely offers a great option of a 280 volt tap.
For the experimenter the HTS-5199 is probably close enough to use for a Rocket but you miss out on that 280 volt tap.
I am curious if there is any strong interest in these? Moose didn't stock them and I've only had one request for them in the past year. I wouldn't mind carrying them and passing them on to the AGF folks *at cost if there is an interest.

Re: Sources for Heyboer HTS-9144?
RJ, which tap is used for the Rocket-high or low? Thanks.
Re: Sources for Heyboer HTS-9144?
I ordered a couple from Heyboer. Even though I have a 5199 on hand, I decided to go with the 9144. I have some old iron for the OT and really want to stick close to the formula.
Clyde- It's the lower tap.

Re: Sources for Heyboer HTS-9144?
Follow Ron Worley's build guides, the TW files section and notes the guys have put a lot of work into those files sections and the information on correct TW for Express, Liverpool and Rocket are there.
For not traditional builds as far as I am concerned you can use 280 or 300v for any of the builds.
Many four EL84 based amps use 300v PTs. Also I have used both 4.3k and 6.6k on my Rocket builds. I have a 5.2k from rjguitar right now that will be used for a Rocket Reverb ala Normster's layout.
It all depends on traditional Trainwreck builds verses spicing things up a little in your own builds.
