Marshall 30th Anniversary 6100 best Marshall ever?

Post by tictac »

I really love the sound of this amp. I've never played one but I love Johnny A's tone and this amp is what he started his solo career out with.

It seems to do everything well, but I really love the crunch rhythm sound and the way Johnny uses it in his music; a very balanced harmonic mix of sweet and crunchy, yum :D

I've been looking at the schematic with the idea of making a preamp based on this amp and it will be a fair bit of work to pull off, especially the three channel switching thing...

I think Johnny went to a pair of JMP-1 preamps after the 6100 before moving on the the TC Electronics G-System which to my ears doesn't have the same harmonic sweetness that his earlier rig has.

Maybe someone has some experience with the 30th anniversary and could share their thoughts one this amp and possible alternatives to get this tone.

The 6100 owners seems to feel that this is the best Marshall amp ever made.... Thank you for your thoughts and opinions!

I think its a good idea to make a simplified version of this amp, which was favored by the great guitarist Michael Casswell, who passed away couple years ago,and he put this along his vintage JTM45 as some of the best especially for playing live, unlike the modern JVM which has good sounds but in his words was too compressed.
Johan Segeborn did a good video on it.
Its fairly easy to find used ones around at a good price, the only concern is the reliability of the switching system with all those boards filled with different chips.

Thanks for those observations.....

I've read about some reliability issues as well; and since Johnny A was using them as a preamp and since I have several stereo amps I was thinking about building a handwired preamp with mono/stereo line out. Even then it'll be a pretty ambitious project. I've buit a few Dumble type amp with dual relays but nothing with this topology before. Not sure how to approach the switching aspect but I don't want to use a bunch of IC's for sure. I'd like to stick with tubes and relays at this point, with some kind of dual cathode follower line out for the mono/stereo out.

I had one for about 8 years, the full stack, etc. Pretty sure only channel 1 and channel 2 sounded decent. Ch 3 wasn't usable for me.

Paid $3400, sold it for $1700 in mint condition. I think Joe Satriani used them for awhile as well.

Doesn't need stereo outs.. unless there is something I'm not aware of?
