I've got my 18 watt tremolo working really good so I would like to experiment with power scaling. I've threatened to do this before so I have a Hall VVR2 and a London Power SV2 power scaling kits on hand that I have never used.
My main concern is that if I scale the PI and PA (Hall) or just the PA (London Power), when the voltage is turned down there is less load on the power supply and the preamp voltage goes up. Does anyone know if this would affect the tremolo?
Thanks in advanced to anyone who replies.

Can you post the amps schematic ?

Re: 18W Tremolo Power Scaling?
Any change in the power supply voltage with that type of tremolo, or one that uses a Opto coupler will have some effect, the degree of which you will be the first to know!
If I had to guess then I would say that the speed rate will not change as much as the depth.

Re: 18W Tremolo Power Scaling?
I'd ask Kevin O'Connor (London Power) directly.
Note: you could also scale the PI with the LP SV2 kit.
Note 2: Kevin also sells a kit called VLK that will prevent the preamp voltages from increasing as you scale back the power section.

Re: 18W Tremolo Power Scaling?
Thanks for the replies.
I posted the same question on 18watt.com and got a reply. Someone said that they scaled the PI and PA and the tremolo still worked. I am surprised that I got a reply at 18watt.com. It is rapidly becoming the internet forum equivalent of the dead letter office.
I am going to give the London Power SV2 a try, and scale just the power amp. If the tremolo works at all, that will be fine with me. I don't use tremolo but I have someone interested in buying the amp but he wants power scaling. The tremolo should probably work if I am going to sell the amp.
Thanks again,
George

Re: 18W Tremolo Power Scaling?
Note that if you just scale the output stage you need a master volume after the PI otherwise you will drive the crap out of the output tubes more and more as you lower the voltage and it sounds like hell!

Re: 18W Tremolo Power Scaling?
No problem. The London Power SV2 instructions specifies that a PPIMV (Drive) is required and the kit comes with a dual 1M 16mm pot to use for a PPIMV.Stevem wrote:Note that if you just scale the output stage you need a master volume after the PI otherwise you will drive the crap out of the output tubes more and more as you lower the voltage and it sounds like hell!
