AO35 trannys in an 18 watt lite IIB build. HEATERS??

Post by fish22 »

Hey everybody,
So I have an AO35 that I did the standard old Carmen Ghia thing to and it was just a 'meh' project that kinda fizzled out. So I've been wanting to do an 18watt Lite IIb for awhile now and thought  I'll use the AO35 transformers for that vintage Mojo!

Fast forward to me wiring up my new amp. All new everything, new wiring, components, chassis etc just reusing the Hammond PT and OT.

So I start looking at the layout to wire the heaters, then It hits me....
The hammond had a 5y3 rec, the 18watt has an EZ81. My new amp is going to have an EZ81 too.

Looking at the AO35 schematic, It looks like the PT has a 5v tap going to the 5y3 and a 6.3v tap on V1-V4.

As you all know the EZ81 in the 18watt uses 3.15v on the EZ81.

So am I just screwed or am I missing the obvious solution?

I feel like I've seen a lot of people do an AO35 to 18watt conversion, but it never occurred to me that they might keep the 5y3...

Anyway, what say you guys?

You can wire the EZ81 on the 6.3v filament string with all the other tubes. Or you can use a 5Y3, 5AR4, etc., on the 5v winding. Your choice.

I used an old Hammond power transformer for my Marshall 18watt TMB clone. Worked like a champ, though the plate voltage was a tad high. I also changed mine to fixed bias which jumped the plate voltage up to 172vdc. I'm using my 120vac browner to drop it down to a more tube friendly 150vdc. I'm running my amp at 114vac:)
