I've been idly considering an fx loop for a couple of weeks, as my buddy insists on their necessity.
A few things that have crystalised out so far are -

1/ It should be bypassable to eliminate any impact on the signal path when not in use.
To that effect, one of the Fender type jack sockets with a built in DPDT switch would be beneficial https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/S-H507-A ie when there's nothing plugged into the loop return, the loop is completely out of circuit.

2/ It should maintain signal polarity. That makes tubes unfeasible as the active elements, but unless the equipment in the loop has a tube only signal path, an fx loop seems a waste of a tube anyway.

3/ Discrete devices would be preferable to an op-amp IC, though an dual op-amp would make for a simple, predictable implementation, given a suitable power supply, eg Fender type bias tap / winding.
