2203 bass amp build

Post by Xander8280 »

The preamp will probably be switched to a bassman/twin style pre. Three stages, large bypass caps and I will try to get the the B+ as high as possible. Is it okay to draw the plate voltage for the preamp tubes from the same 'spot' the phase inverter is getting its plate supply? Simply not having one filter cap and the two 10k resistors between the the PI and V1 and V2?

Obviously coupling caps at 0.047 and .1uf on the phase inverter's feed. What changes can be made to the 2203 power amp to get headroom and the most low end possible? 12AT7 or 12AU7 PI? 6550/KT88 a must?

Maybe highpassing the NFB or adding a resonance control? NFB higher than usual, 4/8ohm tap with a lower resistor? Maybe the attenuation of higher frequencies may give the illusion of headroom and obvious low end thunder.

Thank you for any input, I know it's silly that I love the 2203 but want it to be loud and clean. 2203 skeleton with bass and clean improvements...

Cheers!

You really do not want to have any thing more than one preamp tube ( two gain stages) on just one power supply node, and the first gain stage should be at least 3 nodes down stream that way by the time the DC power supply voltage has got there the level of 120 hz hum making AC ripple will be under .180 amp/ 180 ma!
The decoupling provided by the filtering stages is very important in high gain amps and or Bass amps where a lot of low frequency power is generated just in the preamp section!

Thanks Steven!

I was wondering what's the best route to up the B+ voltage, would using 100+100 caps and trial&error with resistor values allow for higher voltage but, ripple filtering?

Is there less of a voltage drop using larger filter caps with smaller resistors(or no resistors) and, still similar ripple reduction?
