Those old RS caps are a bitch to find and when you do find them they are pretty inconsistent as to how they sound (they are cheap caps)..Could be a reason why some of the older Marshalls that used them were all over the place..As well as the voltages?.

If you set your treble control at noon...at least 1/2 of your tone comes from the treble cap?..Not to mention the bright cap!!

I snipped some ceramic disks out of a Hammond amp this morning, and made a short recording with each : modern silver mica and old Erie. Both 500p, recording setup exactly the same, all tone controls on "5". I'll refrain from disclosing which is which, to negate any "vintage" bias  https://soundcloud.com/jeremyslemenda/500p-treblecaps

I'd choose the caps in the first part. Whatever they are.

I like the 2nd, had a little more bite, which is odd as I thought it was the mica. I'll try it through the stereo and check that.

I was going to jokingly say the first were orange (bright) and the second were yellow (mellow).

First did seem more defined and aggressive and the second more laid back and less focused.

But then again, maybe the person playing was influenced by the color of the caps and played differently. Hence the need for a true double blind. :D

Is it normal, that treble pot has a little effect compared to my jcm 800:s treble pot wich changes higer frequences strongly?
