JTM 45 first power up testing

Post by lespaulplayer »

So I just completed a JTM 45 build. Went to power it up and check to see if the pilot light would light up without tubes in the amp. Powered it up and the pilot light came on and then turned off right away. Checked the fuses and they aren't blown. What should I be looking for? All my connections are right. I've literally double checked every connection over 20 times. Is it possible I have a bad fuse?

Read your post twice...couldn't see a problem. Your pilot light came on, fuse did not blow. Sounds good.

Here's a good start-up guide:

Thanks for the response. I thought the pilot light should stay on, is it normal that it kicked off right away without the tubes installed? It can't be a short because I didn't blow either of my two fuses. There was no smoke, no burning smells, nothing. It just came on and shut off. And I will check out that link you posted. Thanks again.

What type of pilot light? incandescent bulb? Marshall-style neon?

Are you sure you have the correct voltage indicator (IE: do you have a 6v indicator hooked up to your 120VAC mains)?

It's a red marshall style pilot light. Here is the wiring diagram of how I have it hooked up.

It's a 6.3 v pilot light and I have it hooked up as shown in the diagram.

This is the light https://tubedepot.com/products/marshall ... cator-lamp

This is how it's wired up.

There's an old tv repair guy in town and he said to just put all the tubes in and power it up and he thinks it will work.

You hooked a 6.3 volt pilot light up to 120V.

Blinky--gone!

*facepalm

How embarrassing. This is my first build so I'm allowed a stupid mistake, right lol? I spent so much time making sure everything else was correct and wired right, that I overlooked the voltage of the light. I thought a light was a light. Lesson learned.]

Thanks for the help everyone!

We have all done it.

If you're going to make a mistake, you probably made the most desirable and least damaging mistake you can make.

I'd like to say I've never done that.
I'd like to say say it, but I won't.
Not going to mention the more expensive mistakes either.
