Re: What does the Richie's TMB mod do?
The 18 watt marshall amp had a Trem channel, and a normal channel.
When we started the yahoo group about 18watt marshalls years ago, we were building many different things,or adding trying stuff.
Someone said they didn't use trem or had no use for it,and asked what could be done. Back then all the mods we did to the 18 watt, kept something of that circuit in there.
The first chassis we had, I removed the trem channel and put in a somewhat plexi type circuit.
The amp I built had a treble, middle ,bass control, and also a preamp gain control, which was like the MV on the 2203 or 2204. The amp didn't have a feedback circuit,so no presence control. And still had a normal channel too, but it was changed a little bit.
There was a tweakers chart, or what ever marshall type mod would work. And the TMB was refined over the years. But when building amps, its open to make changes or add things etc. That's what it was about.
From those early days, their were also TMB amps that were plate driven tone stacks,or more fender type. I think BrownNotes dirty 18 is like that. Great amp. I think many overlook it.
Most all of the info is out there,or on 18watt.com. Many kits are out there too for TMB amps. its funny to see how many different ones are out there. All may be a little different. 18 watters are cool, even stock. If you look into the 18 watt amps you'll find lite versions,or one channel types, or ones using EF86 channels,on and on..
Use the right parts, transformers and speakers, you'll have a great amp. In simple terms, TMB stands for Treble Middle Bass, and that channel has an extra gain stage than the normal channel.
youtube has many clips of TMB amps, but here some I liked.
