1957 Princeton 5F2-A

Post by va3dxv »

I had the pleasure of repairing/restoring this old trooper on the weekend and playing it for a few days. Just thought I'd share. It had a solid state rectifier in it, but previous to that the socket was wired for a 6X4  and adhesive labeled on the chassis as such. It was also labeled for a 6L6 rather than 6V6... which isn't as surprising. It had a pre-out jack wired in straight to the grid of the power tube with a hole drilled in the chassis :( As you can see also the tweed is unfortunately long gone. Shame :( Same with the original speaker but there's absolutely NO complaints about this JBL K110. This thing sounds great now. Fixed a bunch of wonky wiring and soldering, recapped it and rewired it back to a 5Y3GT and gave it some other basic TLC. Luckily no permanent damage it seems. I used the hole in the chassis for a feedback loop swtich.

If anyone can give me an idea of it's value given the condition, I'd appreciate it.

I'd probably have the Tweed put back on the cab for appearance sake, but I don't know how that would affect resale.
Yours Sincerely

That's a beautiful old beast, great job restoring it. Sadly I have no knowledge of value of these guys.

Right on, looks great! I am in the early stages of a 5F2-A build for my personal practice amp. I am thrilled to see how well this turned out! I am strongly considering a speaker choice of the Jupiter (of all places... I used their red coupling caps they are Astron clones) 10SC (ceramic Small Coil). It has rave reviews and at $59 I cant complain too much if it doesn't meet my needs. Congrats on a well done amplifier I will save the pics to help in my build!

I just got a similar amp to update. This one is untouched! But the caps are leaking.

I see that you left one leg of the heater connected to chassis. I will add an earthed power cord, with earth also connected to chassis--that's cool, right?
