late 70's UL super reverb speaker impedance

Post by dinkotom »

Does anyone have this amp? I'd like to know the individual speaker impedance for this amp, schematic says 16 Ohms: http://schematicheaven.net/fenderamps/c ... tr_rev.pdf

But I have four 8 Ohm speakers (they look stock, blue fender label, CTS I guess) in my amp, paralleled total load measured is 2.3 Ohms.
The back of the amp says 4 Ohm minimum load. My best guess is that the previous owner replaced the speakers with incorrect impedance. Or Fender screwed up...
Will upload some pics later..

That OT has two secondary taps. Check the wiring to the jacks (one is a weird switching jack) to see if the amp was set up to use the yellow-green 2 ohm tap with the 4x8ohm speakers.

The schematic would indicate 4 ohm to each jack.
If the jacks are still wired stock, then just connect 2 speakers to each jack.
Each pair in parallel.

Good luck,

It is 4ohm for each jack, but when only the first jack is used, the OT's 4ohm tap is connected; when the second jack is also used, the 2ohm tap is connected.

It's good that the amp has 8 ohm drivers and that they are CTS , as the Utah drivers these amps came with have a lower SPL rating than the earlier CTS drivers, the CTS ones likely have the much preferred seamed thin cone also !

With them being 8 ohms you can wire them in series parallel to tame some of that amps harsh top end ( inductance difference ) that the 1976 and up amps seem to have and then also by running the 8 ohm tap on the OT use the full secondary winding that it has and you will reap the better tone of having that going on also !

Not to mention that it's less stress for the OT too when the full winding is used!

If the amp / speaker combo is not too brite then wire the speakers in parallel series .
