AB763 layout question

Post by JoeTele »

Could one hang the entire tone stack of an AB763 (DR build in my case) from the pots? I know Gerald Weber suggests mounting the caps, but provided mechanical stability is taken into account, could the 3 caps and the 100k be mounted from the pots, with a single wire running from the 250pf/100k resistor to the junction of the 100k plate load resistor and pin 1 of the 12ax7? Any noise, oscillation, etc issues that might not otherwise result? I'd love to eliminate that much wire.

Thanks!

Can you? Sure!!

Should you? Uhhh....maybe? I don't see why it won't work.

I plant a three position terminal strip behind the treble pot so I have a spot or two to tie down components that don't connect directly to the pots.

Yup, I solder terminal strips to the metal back side of pots all the time when building and or adding mod's to a amp to shorten grid wire lenght and keep things less spread out.
A neat picture perfect tag or ring type board layout, a long with its nessary wire lenght is not by any means the best sounding , but it's easyier to work on for first timers and swap parts on, so like anything in life it's a trade off!

Martin Manning posted a PTP tone stack diagram below.

Have done, with greater or lesser elegance. Better with smaller caps, like Mallory or Panasonic. I was attracted to this idea early because then there's only one wire running from the board to the tone stack.

But lately I'm moving back to caps on the board, at least for the typical FMV tone stack.

Great! I figured part of it had to do with Leo's attention to serviceability but wanted to be sure.

Thanks as always!
