Question on a 6G3 Build

Post by sixg3 »

Hi, new member here and "paint by numbers" type of builder...

I have a question on filter cap wiring that I can’t figure out from schematic or pictures.

Which of the four filter caps have their negative leads connected together on the back of the board?

I know that it really does not matter as they all go to ground but I’m trying to run grounding just like the original where the filter cap board has two separate ground wires going to two different spots in the chassis.

My guess is that the left most 16 uF cap has it's own ground via a black wire on left going to the chassis ground by the PT and that the other three caps are tied together and go to ground on the brass plate via the black wire on right.

I think your guess is correct. Separating the grounds properly does matter if you want to keep power supply noise out of the audio.

The first 2 filters are in the power output stage supply and should be grounded where the PT cenetr taps are grounded the next 2 filters should both be grounded near where the input Jack is bolted down and or picks up its ground if it's a plastic case type!

After this a start ground layout where each of the grounds that deal with one gain stage should have its own ground wire and then go back to the filter grounding point that the stage draws off of.

A theoretically better grounding scheme could be devised, but I'll bet that the original had only the reservoir cap grounded at the PT CT, and all the others joined on the cap board and grounded near the inputs.

Gentlemen thank you very much for your input.

I'm going for originalty in this build as best I can without sacrificing too much on performance, tone, noise, etc. so I think I will stick with what appears to be the original Fender grounding scheme as described in Martin's last post.

Fender followed that same scheme even on the big amps like Twins.
