Two twisted 5E3's, one to sell and one for me
Really been into the 5E3 lately especially the one I built with 6aq5's. Trying to see how cheaply I can build one to sell in my shop. The prototype I built has a 5v4 recto, 6k6 deluxe reverb OP, a choke and sounds amazing. One of those amps that's just fun to play and you don't want to stop.
The new one will have a ss recto and no choke to keep the cost down a bit. The one for me will have a 6sl7 preamp, over sized MC dlx rvb OP, and 6v6's with higher voltage.

Progress, can you guess which one I'm keeping?

I'm guessing the one with the Dijonaise?
Do you build your 5E3s with four input jacks? And then do you jumper them? And then do you wonder, why did I bother using four input jacks?

The cage amps are sexy but I'm a little biased toward cage amps

Re: Two twisted 5E3's, one to sell and one for me
thanks for the kind words.
now a question
I installed a weber fan kit from the filament supply in my amp and when I go from standby to run I can hear the fan slow down a bit. https://taweber.powweb.com/store/fan_schem.jpg
Power trans is rated for 140mA and I'm only running 2 6v6's cathode biased. Filament winding is 4A with 2 6v6's, 12ax7, 6sl7, and very small computer fan.
Can the B+ effect the filament voltage?
Amp sounded great in church Sunday through a Gold in a Thiele cab.
FYI the fan is really noisy in these kits so I'll be making my own from now on.
thanks

You don't need a fan with this design (cage amp).

Re: Two twisted 5E3's, one to sell and one for me
Well this is the one that's going up for sale in my store. Grid wires from the input jack were acting micro-phonic so I replaced them with shielded cable. I'm going to redo the layout for the next one putting the preamp tubes on the other side of the board close to the input jacks. Need to label the chassis yet.
It passed the 4 hour church test with my butchered '52 les paul. Gotta love the off center tailpiece.
makes tuning a beotch.
