New Champ Build
Finished up a new Champ yesterday. Digging it so far with this old Rola AlNiCo 8" and the tubes I used for first play test. Fired up without a hitch. I'm happy with it and hope you guys dig!

Very nice one
Like the recto as well. Makes the amp look solid.
I got a russian 5c3s (5U4 equivalent) that is huge. Gotta take a photo, but its damn huge.

Re: New Champ Build
Looks great! Very clean build. Did you go with a 330-0-330 or 250-0-250 PT? OT primary?
Re: New Champ Build
Thanks Neal, Niki and Dave!
I actually used the small rectifier...
Dave, the PT's HV winding is 325-0-325 and the OT has both 5K and 8K taps and I'm using the 5K currently. Conveniently, the secondary has 4 and 8 ohm taps and nice because that Rola is 8R.

Huh, wondering what the big one is like?
I will take a picture of the 5c3s, I have plugged now in the 5b6
That is huge phew..

Re: New Champ Build
Finally got my Amphenol plug and Mogami cable today and have officially finished it. I'm really liking this amp so far, but only on the variac set at 117v. It doesn't get too happy at the wall's 123v...
I might do a short clip of it mostly clean and a bit dirty. This speaker is very cool and chimes beautifully.
Here's a pic of the big one... I may call this amp the "Potato Masher" if I leave it in there.

Looks really nice. Thanks for the information on your transformers. Do you have a favorite OT tap?
Re: New Champ Build
Thanks Dave. I have some experience with 5K and 11K and they both have their merits IMO. I haven't actually used an 8K yet. This new build has a flatter response with 5K, and with my LP, that is a very nice thing to have. Jazzy tones are nicer and there is never too much high end. Less gain than my experience with the higher impedance, which tends to have more gain, be more aggressive and have more bite. I've kept the same feedback resistor for all (My tweak) and always have it tied to the 4 ohm tap. Overall, I'm really liking the 5K, although the RCA tube book actually suggests 8K for plate voltage as high as these amps usually see. I'm just very pleased with how mellow this thing is and the appreciable lack of bite with the treble pup, but there's a time for everything and I do like those other amps with their higher impedance a good bit dirtier, and they do it much earlier as well.
