Debating a brownface super build

Post by beasleybodyshop »

After seeing the whole thread on "what amp is this" earlier its spurred my interest in build a 6G4A super with the three tube tremolo. After looking at the schematic, however im seeing a few nonstandard parts in this bad boy:

Tone stack is kind of odd - treble is a 350K pot with a 70K tap. looked around and couldnt find one

Speed pot is a 4 Meg Reverse Audio taper....ditto on finding one. I do find 3 meg reverse tapers quite a bit though, could that be used as a substitute? Maybe have a 1 meg resistor tied to it - make it switchable so you could at least get down into the range that a 4 meg would offer?

Schem for the 6G4-A doesnt list the value of the intensity pot either.

Other than the wacky pots, it looks like its a doable build. Thoughts on building one to me are removing the normal channel, possibly swapping in a blackface tone stack (if i cant find a workaround for the treble pot) and using a fixed value for the midrange, and a true adjustable bias instead of the fixed resistor. maybe use that extra tube for an effects loop or built in d'lator. This thing is going to be in head format, and with no reverb having a loop would be nice.

The 350K / 70K pot is available at weber, though I've read here that the taper isn't quite right. The intensity pot is 10M-RA and I don't know where that can be found. As for the speed pot, it might be possible to use a 3M-RA and scale the fixed resistors in the circuit down 25% and the capacitors in the circuit up 25% to get the same speed range.

Thanks! i forget to check weber. Saw that this amp build has been documented before, but no one mentioned dealing with the 10 meg or the 4 meg pot or how to get around that on TGP

Gonna keep looking.

Seriously let's get all the stuff together to do some and I will convert this dual showman thing and this other bandmaster.

It's a groovy sound but I don't like playing that amp, I mean I am scared to mess with it much. There. Scared mostly.

In my infinite obsession i managed to pull together a BOM for a single channel iteration with a selectable output impedance. stuff is from mouser and Antique electronic supply....oh yeah and iron is classictone.

i threw in some dumble inspired stuff, MF resistors where they would usually go and what not. use your discretion.

good luck. someday I will start this build.

Edit: I forgot to add tube sockets. lol.

Hoffman has both 10mRA and the 350k tapped pots.

I had to get mine from Germany last year the only place I could find that 10mRA pot at that time.

Can't go wrong w/ a brown Super:

Al Anderson (paisley tele) should be using a brown Super, was whenever I saw them around that time.

Speakers are critical. No suggestions, I'm sick of speakers.
