5F4 (Tweed Super) help

Post by sixstringer »

I inherited a finished (but buggy) 5F4, I've been going through it, correcting minor issues here and there. It works but is a little noisy, I've just discovered that the tone controls both work as volume controls, that is, they do not effect the treble or bass as you would expect but rather, they will roll off the signal to nothing. Any clues about how to track down the problem?
Thanks in advance

For starters, verify your as built against a known layout.

Are the treble and bass pots you used indeed 1meg which they should be and not 100K?
Is the wire coming off the trebles wiper feeding the out bound side of the 220k resistor off the bass pot?

Confirmed 1 meg pots for both. a 220k resistor connects the center lug of the treble pot to the center lug of the bass pot. The center lug of the treble pot connects to a pin 2 of V3 (the (PI), the center lug of the bass pot connects to a 100k resistor per the 5F4 layout and schematic.

To clarify, the volume pot(s) still control of overall output, each tone control will attenuate that volume is to zero with turn all the way down. There is no effect on the tone with the tone controls.

The 5f4 schematic I just looked at shows the wiper of the treble pot feeding the input / grid of the next gain stage which is also the out bound side of the 220k resistor that comes off the right hand lug for the bass pot, which is not as you posted!

Mine is wired as shown in the layout.

Hah, I didn't notice that. I just googled the layout, and this one popped up at the top of the list. If the layout is wrong, that might explain the problem.

The amp is wired per the layout shown in the previous post. This is incorrect?

I reviewed other layouts for the 5F4 and they all indicate the same connections for the tone controls (including the Fender layouts and the version on the Weber site).

That layout looks like it matches the schematic and the 5E5 as well, unless I am not seeing something.

Can you post that schematic?

I resolved another is issue, the presence pot was wired incorrectly but correcting it did nothing to decrease the hum or resolve the tone circuit problems. Chop sticking my way around the chassis I did notice that the pin 2 lug of V2 is very microphonic and that changing the tube did nothing to make it less so.
