output transformer characteristics.

Post by pula58 »

I am curious how people woild describe the tonal properties of various Fender (blackface) style output trannies.

For example, let's consider the following brands:

Hammond
Magnetic components
Mercury magnetics
Heyboer

and, let's consider 20-22W sized trannies., and 35-40W sizes too

If you could use words to dscribe the tonal effect of the various brands, what would you say?

Different companies use different winding patterns that create a different tonal signature..

Wht's you favorite, and why?
Whats your least favorite, and why?

Big topic to cover man.
In no particular order I will take a stab at the big ones of tone.
1)
How much above or below the ideal impedance that the OT is as compared to the tubes used.
2)
How close to the full rated wattage the OT will be pushed, as in saturated flux wise, not just current.

3) if the OT is interleaved wound or not.

4) the type of iron the core is made of.

to my ear, the grain aligned steel laminations have a briteness that I could not dial out, but, hard to separate that from the effect of the winding pattern itself.

Sonically, what do more interleaves do to the tone?
