5b6 Cage amp #2

Post by M Fowler »

Second cage amp fired up tonight and will play it more tomorrow. Sounded great, nice and smooth for blues or pedal steel.

No hum and notice filter caps are positioned next to the preamp tubes for best function.

Mojo Dijon coupling caps .1
Weber iron again.

Wouldn't you know it put the cage on and one mounting hole runs right smack into the PT mounting bolt. Need to go to store and get a black handle to mount on one side of the chassis opposite of transformer side so the weight is down when you carry, works well that way.

Ran through some power tubes today JJ 6L6GC, KT120's and Sovtek 5881/6L6GB that Jana gave me.

The amp is very quiet idling so I'm happy about that.

Sorry I didn't see this post earlier missed it some how.

PT Weber W022798 40W with standup end bell kit I use 720vdc HT/200mA I used the brown 120v mains since my house is 118v at the wall.

OT Weber 404248 40W 4k primary and 2/4/8 secondary.

Note regarding end bell kit, I had a complaint with Weber which they seemed to think was silly on my part the replacement end bell for the lead wires side was not as deep dished as the original I was replacing. Weber said to just compress it all together. I tried using a clamp and then said that was not right and ended up using spacers. I said maybe your engineer should make end bells with the correct dish to fit the transformer. Typical Weber engineering, terrible. Next time I will just cut a hole and mount it that way like I did on my 1st cage amp.

For those that hate zip ties notice my use of zip tied radial cap to the filament wires.

You can give me crap if you want but no there is no noise induced. :)

Mark - don't you know that the electrolytic caps are only supposed to be zip tied to red-hot cathode resistors?

The cage amp has been popular. :)

Glad to help with the info.

Yeah I saw that cap tied to the bias resistor in the LW. :)

I had the same problem with the standup bell. They didn't seem to care or be helpful at all and questioned my skill level, so I will order nothing else from them even though I love their speakers. If they don't value my business enough to be helpful then that ends our business relationship.

Yeah, I like Weber, but they somewhat pick and choose what issues they fix. I had a copper cap that fried instantly, and they immediately sent me a replacement (I'm also in Indiana, so I got it like next day). However, on my most recent build, my transformer was WAAAAY out of spec. I e-mailed back and forth with one of their techs (who confirmed that their remaining stock had the same flaw), and it eventually got to the point where I just decided to deal with it.

All that said, they do treat me very well when I come by the shop. I got the grand tour of the old facility by TA Weber my first time there. I recently went to the new facility and was shown around, even though it meant that they closed up after hours by the time I was done with my shopping spree (which was less than $100 in small parts). Coupled with the fact that they're one of the cheapest options, I can live with some minor inconveniences.

Sorry if that sounded like a commercial. I promise they aren't paying me!
