Hot Rod Deluxe Bias Pots

Post by beasleybodyshop »

Ok,

So ive had about 10 to 12 hot rod deluxes on my bench in the last several months. One thing I notice on just about all of them is the bias pots have a dead spot somewhere right in the middle. Almost every single one. if you nudge it into this dead spot, it drops the grid voltage down to like -5 volts....and zap. Customers kept complaining that their amp keeps eating tubes. I have seen this more often than not on these amps. You have to be real careful and either run it on either side of the dead spot.

Anyone else seen this? Its so odd that ive seen it on so many of them - both older and newer ones.

All the time! The pots are crap, I get the bias to where I want it, take a resistance measurement and stuff in a 1/2 watt resistor to replace the pot.
You can snip the pot out without pulling the board off if the owner can not afford a good replacement pot.
