Question about 6g2 voltages

Post by Wilson »

Hi, I have a 64 6g2 Princeton (transition) and I'm trying to figure out what the B+ is supposed to be.

My PT is 125P1A which is right for 6g2 but I am getting about 420v on the plates of the 6v6 (various nos 5y3's) which would match blackface specs. The 6g2 schematic says that I should have 319v on the plates.

The PT is putting out about 360v ac before the rectifier and all voltages after are about 100v over 6g2 spec (matching blackface with 125P1B).

When I look at replacement transformers for brown princetons, I'm seeing mostly blackface voltage specs.

What gives? - is the Fender 6G2 schematic wrong? Do I have a 125P1B with the wrong number on it? I assume lowering the plate voltage by 100v would have a significant impact on the feel of the amp - currently it is pretty clean.

Anybody have or built a 6G2? What were/are your voltages?

Thanks.

Some of the older Fender schematics are goofy. The 6G2 shows 315V B+ with the 125P1A and a 5Y3GT; the 6G10 (Harvard) shows 360V B+ with the 125P1A and a 5Y3GT. Fender did sometimes change transformer specs without changing the transformer number, but who knows if that applies here. What you seem to have are essentially 6G10 voltages adjusted for today's higher mains AC. I can't say whether there really were any 6G2s with only 315V.

Thanks - that makes sense. Maybe I'll drop the b+ to something under 400v with a zener and call it a day. I won't worry about trying to approach 315v.
