Bassman RI

Post by mike7 »

Hi all,
I'm new here and need an answer to a question that has been nagging at my brain. I played a Bass man RI at guitar center and absolutely fell in love with the tone!! It had 5881's if I remember correctly. It had tweed covering but I can't remember what year RI it was. Maybe '59?
Anyway, does anyone know what circuit was used in these amps cause I would love to build one. Talk about chime and glassy tones, this one had it. I used to own a '67 vibrolux and
Loved that amp but for different reasons all together. Great clean tone but not as chimey as the bass man RI.
Thanks for any help you can offer this tone junkie. :D

Greetings Mike,
That would be the 5F6A circuit. Awesome amp and an excellent choice for a homebuild project.
Cheers,
Dave O.

Part of the magic is the trio of Jensen 10s in that open backed cab. I like that amp, too.

Was one missing? The Bassman has a quad of 10s.

Oh, right. Which one has three? Vibro King! Anyway, it was the Bassman RI that I repaired and liked.

The reissue also shares some circuit similarities with the 6G6 Blond Bassman.
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.

kinda.......

after '57 both Bassman 5F6A and Twin 5F8A did get some changes so the differences in the phase-inverters started around '57, not around '60.

the schematics weren't never updated.....

I don't recall which one was the 'good one' but good is in the fingers anyway. Look up 5F6A and the 6800 and 10K tail resistor, and the two types of presence wiring. There might be a few other minor 5f6a things with coupling caps but all easy fast tweaks. The reissue IIRC ran hot, like 450V, I'd do it around 400V if I was you, ~330Vac on the PT. With 400V you can then run it SS rectified too without blowing up. Put a pull switch on Vol 2 and switch a .68 cap on V2 Marshall style. You'll love it. Hunt down a pair of real 5881s.

Great freakin' platform, the best ever. Ive been modding mine for 25 years to various bassmans and marshalls and every version sounds great with all guitars and speakers and cabs.

Have Heyboer custom wind you a bassman OT, they are familiar with it, and spec 2/4/8/16 taps and then you can make it a Bandmaster, Bassman, or Marshall at will.

Alright!! Thank you very much.
I have seen the schematic and it seems pretty straight forward.
Yeah I have owned a vibrolux, champ, bassmans etc but for some reason that bassman sounded sweet! Not sure if it had four tens or two twelves but I need to find out so I can stay as close to it as possible. Would it have Eminence speakers in it? Not to up on what fender is using nowadays.
Any thoughts on Kevin O'Connors version of the 5f6 circuit in tonnes of tone?
Be well all

Some documents you might find useful here: https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... 321#226321
That version has a few tweaks that won't change the tone at all, but should reduce noise a bit and improve reliability. The RI baseman is supposed to be the same as the '59, but it's voltages are too high, and of course the construction is PCB.

Lots of options if you start considering Marshall schematics, as you should as they are just variations of the same. I like the 5F6A w/ JTM45 filtering, a little bit more solid w/ little tone change.

Hey all,
Been in fla working but now I'm back. Looking at my turret board I have only 3/8in. spacing between them. Is that enough? Looks close to me but what do I know :D
I bought the board from antique electronic supply.
Also, I searched for a way to omit the ground switch since I will not have one. I should know this but I am not sure what to do with the neutral. I am using Martin's modified 5F6a layout(very nice layout BTW) I see where the PT power is connected to the neutral. Should I use a terminal just to connect those two together since there is no ground switch? Will that be sufficient?
Thank you for any and all your help
Mike
