Ceriatone clone Bassman 5F6A tone problem

Post by vinceg »

Hi, I'm new in this forum. I'm Italian and do not speak english.
I've build this amp but I noticed that I'm not get much response from the mid and bass tone control.
Also, at vol 3 amp is not powerful as it should be. I need to vol to at least 5 to appreciate the sound.
I never heard play a 5F6A so do not know if my own sounds good or not.

Thank's at all for your help.

Can you post a high resolution photo of your mid and bass pot wiring to the tone board? Some volume pots don't come on until 3 you may want to try another pot if you have one. Could be a carbon tracing problem inside the volume pot.

The pots look like they are wired correctly at the pots not sure about the to the board with this photo. L to R you have mid, bass, treble I assume like Ceriatone's layout?

You may need to verify that each pot is the value needed.

Loosen the volume knob and reset it so at 1 the volume can be heard.

If you turn the Volume up all the way, is your amp loud enough to rattle windows? I'd like to understand if the pot is bad or if something is wrong with your amp.

The pots are of the right values and L to R are Mid, Bass and Treble like Ceriatone layout. The wired also is correct.

Yes, with the volume up all the way the amp is perfect. Even the tones seem to work. It may be that the amp is fine but I can not compare it so not sure if this behavior is correct.

Have you checked your voltages?

On the Bass pot, the solder joint on the bass pot that connects to the Mid pot looks a little wonky. Might want to try re-flowing it. Are you using a bright cap on the bright volume pot?

I built a clone 5F6-A about 10 years ago, 1st amp. The tone controls on that circuit work pretty okay IMHO. I found it was clean sounding up until around "5" or "6" when it started to break up a little. Is that what you mean when you say "I need vol to be at least 5 to appreciate the sound"? It is a really loud 50 watts, that's for sure. I was running mine through 2 x 10" Emi Legends.

The capacitor is located on the vol bright, as layout.
At maximum volume the amp is a real bomb!
But I do not know if the volume to 2 or 3 that should have power. I have the impression that it is little, but maybe it's just my impression.
The voltages are Ok
