Signal Caps for Twin Reverb Build- FINISHED!

Post by jasjr »

This is my first post after joining this forum and lurking around for quite awhile. I first off have to say a huge thanks to all of you who have shared your knowledege and the all the incredible information here.

On to business...... I am going to be building a Twin Reverb for a friend and former bandmate of mine. I will most likely order a kit from Mojo, and they supply Sprague 715ODs in their kits. I have never cared for these caps personally, but Mojo says they have excellent results with them. The end user of this amp wants CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN tone.
I should also mention he has two JBLs that have been reconed by ABroun Soun for this amp. He is looking for that Jerry Garcia vibe.
I am leaning towards substituting in some different signal caps, but would appreciate any feedback or opinions on different options such as Mallory 150s, Mojos Dijon caps, Sozos etc.

Thanks for any and all help!

715's are pretty sterile sounding. 6ps give more of a vintage flavor. I prefer them over the 150 mallories , which are metalized film. Even better would be Jupitor signal caps. But Jerry seemed to be after a Hifi sound so 715's might be closer to his goal.

Sozo Bluemolds are cool. Look good, sound good. If you want to spare the bones for them, (there are a lot in that circuit) then go for it, but the values aren't that widespread, unfortunately. For a circuit as clean as that one, you may just want to use Mallory 150s or 6PS. The 150s are metallized, unlike 6PS and Sozos, but plenty of reputable builders use them and get great sounds, so I wouldn't worry too much about it, especially for a Twin. All depends on whether you want to spend, or want to really spend. I'd go with 6PS or Mallories.

I second Billy's comment, 715s are the way to go. 6ps will also work with a Jbl speaker.

Me too. I've used em in three Deluxes and a 5B6. They're making more values now, but I still wish they had as many as they do with the Mustard line. Enough to get through most Fender builds, though.

I prefer a polyester cap as well, but for a 'CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN' tone, the 715 is the one.

I haven't built a dedicated 'clean' amp yet. I would like to try some polypropylenes for something like a Twin... Or in the inverter portion of the Rocket.

Thank you all for the replies!
I feel extremely fortunate to have such a knowledgable group to draw experience from.

After reading all your replies, I think I will go ahead and use the 715s as supplied by Mojo. I too find them to be "sterile" sounding, but I think in this instance they may be the right choice.

Chief Mushroom Cloud- Thanks for the excellent link to Jerry's amps and gear.
I think I will put together a stock AB763 circuit as a starting point, and possibly incorporate some of those mods down the road if requested.
This will be my first amp build in almost 13 years, so I don't want to get too creative until I have a solidly working and good sounding amp first!!

I'm sure I'll be back with a few more questions before all is said and done!
Wish me luck and thank you all again!

Just wanted to give an update on this.

Ordered the Mojo kit with the 715 ODs, got all my "stuff" out of the attic and was promptly derailed with some personal issues. Thankfully the person I was building this for is a friend and was patient and understanding.

I finally sat down last weekend and put the iron to the parts and got it done!
After a couple of small issues (resistor change on the bias pot and a little vibrato noise) I have a working Twin Reverb clone!
Sounds very good, although I still think the 715s lack warmth for my personal tastes. Hopefully the future owner likes them!

I think I will tweak on it some while I have it here.
I'm also thinking about reworking the normal channel a bit, pending an OK from the eventual owner. I will start a different thread for that.

I would again like to thank everyone for the help and encouragement.
