well, thanks to @AmpMike at Modulus amplification, he had a new tank here for me today. Issue solved.
I also took the opportunity to as suggested by someone above to make a bag from the left over tolex, which will stop the dust and crap getting in there if nothing else

A happy ending to a strange issue.

unfortunately my donor one i had lying around was the wrong impedance.I think it had come from a solid state reverb in a tube amp.
Assume it's a Peavey "donor". There are tube circuits to mate higher input impedance of the 4EB2C1B.
For example -- http://www.channelroadamps.com/articles/reverb_driver/. Obviously different from stock Fender. Some might consider it an upgrade.
Presuming another MOD as replacement. Nice muffle bag too. How does it now sound over all?

Best .. Ian
Ian,
Yes it was peavey donor but the reverb was solid state. I did think about reworking things to make it work but as tanks are cheap i just went with the MOD fender one.
It sounds great now, no resonance and NO feedback.I'm sure the bag will help keep it all nice and clean and tidy in there.
It really helps to keep the spring end connectors from breaking if you glue some weather strip foam below the two springs near there center so that you limit there unneeded range of motion / flex in the springs when you travel with the amp.
Each spring is held in place on its ends by thin and very hard ( prone to braking) wire that goes into the 2 tubes on each end of the tank.
Note that if these brake I have worked out a way to fix that issue when can save a hard to get vintage tank!
When I die, I want to go like my Grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep.
Not screaming like the passengers in his car!
Cutting out a man's tongue does not mean he’s a liar, but it does show that you fear the truth he might speak about you!

thanks for that tip Steve. Next time it's apart I shall do that
