Tapped Treble Pot + 10 meg Intensity pot for Brownface fender amps

Post by dbeasley »

Has anyone got a good source for these? I've been looking for the 350K tapped Treble pot and 10 meg vibrato intensity pot for a Brownface amp build.

Ted Weber used to sell these but they appear to be out of stock.

Does anyone have a good source?

For the tapped pot you can do like this:

The trouble is the 350K tapped pots that are available now has a 10% taper. I bought a couple in case the pots in my 6G7a went bad. The real pots have a 30% taper (roughly) and that's part of the joy with these amps.

That's the beauty of the solution I came up with. You can choose any pot you like and create the tap using two resistors. If the knob position is important, find a J-Taper 500k, or use a linear pot.

Martin,

Thanks again for your excellent help.

I now see that Hoffman sells the tapped pot. However I am curious to try Martins method.

I think they are all from the same stock. Years ago I pointed out that the taper was wrong but I'm sure it fell on deaf ears.

10% taper or 30% taper... Just changes the dial numbers a bit. Not a big deal to me. Still got the exact same control. I'm sure that if 10% (rather than 30%) taper had been available when those amps were built, Leo would have used them. The real charm of those amps was the harmonic vibrato.

I find the 30% taper treble control and the 10% taper bass control work well together in Fender amps. Fender did get the 2-35 taper pot specially made for them, they are used as treble controls in Dumble amps.
