Brownface pro 6G5 Transformers

Post by strat100 »

Researching for a 6G5 Pro build not the A model so will have the 5 preamp tubes not the 6 of the A model. The transformer charts i have seen all quote the 6g5a transformers not the 6g5 and conflicting reports of different size output transformers, some say 28w others 40w, so would like a little bit of help getting the right transformers and living in good old UK i am really stuck with Hammond Transformers unless i pay more for postage than the transformer.

In their guitar amp line, Hammond lists 290EEX and 291EEX PT's as replacement for Fender Pro. The 291 "upgrade" is a better grade of steel, I believe. The filament winding is rated 3.15A, so with 2x 6L6 at 0.9A each that leaves 1.35A for the preamp tubes. At 300mA each for those, I think you would be ok to run up to 5 (asking 3.3A, only 5% over). For the OT, a 35W 1750J would be similar to the original brown pro U-frame type, with 4Ω secondary, or go with 1760J with 4, 8, and 16Ω outputs. You could also go to a 1760L Bassman unit, which would have 50W capability and more low-end.

Magnetic Components lists 40-18029 PT for Euro power for the Pro.

Because of where you live you could take advantage of getting a Marshall replacement PT for a JTM45 as they would work great for what your looking to do!
I use them all the time for folks in there super reverbs or Bassman when they want to cut back some on the output wattage and get the V+ voltage down to about 420 at a idle current of 35 to 38 per tube.

Well if you want it to be like / sound like back when the amp was first made then even if you had a original PT you have to veriac the line voltage down to 110 vac, not the 120 vac that we have in the USA now, and yes I know you don't live here, but you get my point I hope?

If you really like the harmonic tremolo, then the Revibe may be worth considering. Then you can easily add the harmonic trem effect plus the 6G15 reverb to any amp.

Have the variac ready and waiting :D , and the revibe is on the list but wanted the trem in an amp, one that sounds so wonderful on the edge of break up and it fits in between my crema wheat 5e3 clone and my vibrolux reverb clone.

The intensity pot is a 10M-L. I used a 10M-RA that Hoffman sells. The speed pot is a 4m-ra. Using a 3m-ra is fine. Frequency will be a bit faster but that is easy to slow down if desired.
