I Got The Disease, Real Bad!

Post by The Ballzz »

So folks,
Now that I'm totally in love with my new 5E3 Tweed Deluxe, I'm stalking my next victim. I like the idea of the Tweed Super, but don't need the extra watts of the 6L6 tubes. I also really like the whole "cathode biased" thing of the Deluxe, with all it's quirks, etc.

I'm kinda leaning towards a 5E4 Super preamp, but with the 5E3 power section, cathode biased, utilizing a 5Y3 instead of the specced 5U4. Of course, this means finding the correct PT with the added current for the additional 12A?7!

Any and all thoughts and comments will be sincerely appreciated.

TIA,
Gene

I build a 5f4 super a couple of years ago. Very close to the fender schemo. Its my 'clean' combo for gigging.

Most of the time I bring my 5e3 tweedle dee with VVR, though.
It's plentyfull of volume for most blues gigs.

However, I like both for what they are and would not go for a 5e3 powersection in a 5f4.
Diva or not? - Respect for Mr. D's work....)

With the 6L6, 5F4 version of the Super, I can see why you would use it as your 'clean' combo. It would seem that by the time you get the amp into any sort of 'overdrive' it may be loud enough to kill small pets and children, at 20 paces! The reasoning behind my thoughts was that the Super preamp may give a tad more drive and complexity to the tone, while retaining that "magical" on the edge of breakup/compression of the Deluxe power section when the sweet spot is dialed in.

I do certainly note that the 'tone stack' is located in a different part of the circuit than the that of the 'tone control' on the 5E3. I'm curious as to whether or not it's location and added complexity/components may "suck" any added drive achieved by additional preamp stages? The 5F4 & 5E4 appear to have one extra 'gain' stage with the inclusion of a cathode follower?

I truly appreciate your experienced reply/review and thoughts. I'm not necessarily looking for confirmation of my plan, but rather good reasons/why/wherefores as to yay or nay.
Thanks Again,
Gene

Tweed twin. Watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CChQUNmi7
Ignore the guitar. He talks about the amp about half way through.

Here's a tweed style build that I did that's off the beaten path.

If this doesn't work, search on youtube for "Gibson Harrison-Clapton "Lucy" Les Paul : Presented By Guitar Center"

I think maybe the link was incomplete.

I'd like to retract the comment to ignore the guitar. At about 1:00 he says, "Your not gonna like this." LOL

Also, I'm real sorry (actually, I'm not) to hear you're not well. As you know, all of us here have the disease, too, so why shouldn't you?

Cloning an amp is kind of a "paint by numbers" thing. Except for the Trainwrecks which are also about lead dress and tweaking.

But if you really want to have some fun, pick a classic amp with warts and "fix" it. Tweed Champ (wonderful amp with no power), 5E3, probably still low on the power side, all the black face Fenders tthrew away all their gain. The possibilities are endless.

Great link, thanks for fixin' it, that Twin sounds about as much like the best of Marshall and Fender goodness as one could hope for, all rolled into one Tweed package! 8) This whole "TWEED" thing is generally news to me and I'll make a new thread for sharing a "funny" story, when I get a couple minutes.

And as far as the "Disease," the fact that all youze other guyz gottz it is why I hang here! :P Not to mention the fact that is little to no flaming of folks who get hair brained, wild bug up their arse ideas. You folks are so generous with your sharing of knowledge, experience and ideas, even with relative "green horns" like me! All thoughts & comments are warmly welcomed and appreciated.

And ToneMerc, although not truly a "Bassman" as claimed early in the build thread, a seriously nice build, that I'll bet sounds damn near spiritual in it's sweet spot!

Thanks Guys,
Gene
