So, I'm thinking of jumping on the 5B6 bandwagon. I'm thinking of using some good ol' 6L6 metal can tubes. Those are pretty darn close in spec to the original tubes, right? I'm a sucker for these old metal cans.

I'm honestly a little scared that I can't see if it's red-plating or not.Phil_S wrote:No glow, no magic![]()
Everyone needs one of these. Easy build, great tone.

A PT spec'd at 350-0-350 is preferred. I'd build it up exactly like the Fender schem, except for the coupling caps coming off the 6SC7. I changed those to .02uf with great results.

I used .05 there and reduced the 5881 coupling caps to .05 from .1, sounds great! And the Mag Cpts Supro Thunderbolt PT which is 350-0-350. With the matching OT.
I had a '47 Magnatone SE 10W combo with a metal 6L6 in it, worked fine but I changed it to a glass GC just in case it overheated.
An old tube seller told me about 15 years ago that the metal cased tubes were prone to overheating and failing. He was in his eighties then so I'm sure he knew what he was talking about.
