Octals have a bigger plate structure so tend to be more microphonic, as you add gain this might worsen. Depends on the tube and you won't know till you try, give it a try and report back.

I'm no expert but I think the correct electronics term is "cascode."LedZepp007 wrote:I guess I'm wondering whether cascading would sound like crap with the octal tubes.

Enough hair-splitting.
Merlin says to try a 6SN7.

Yeah this.matt h wrote:I think he's just talking about cascading (series) gain stages...

Too much to learn, too little time! Thanks for explaining the difference.

Synchu,
Did you keep the 2M grid leaks at the input?

Re: Fender 5B6 with 6V6 point to point build
I think I will give this a try based on what's-his-face's PTP layout. I may need to double check a cascaded layout with you guys before I embark, though. I can always build a 5e3 later.
Re: Fender 5B6 with 6V6 point to point build
@Structo - yep. 2M at the input. But, I guess whatever larger than 1M is used should be fine.
Didn't try a serial arrangement, but its an easy mod and can be put on switch so once I get off the HRM, I am (very) slowly tweaking, I would try that.

Late to the party here but excellent looking & sounding build!
