Fender champ 600 no sound

Post by filebandit »

I upgraded the vales(tubes) & speaker a while back & everything was good. I switched it on a few days ago & there was an odd noise then silence. I checked &replaced the tubes ( I already had some spares) ....nothing. I thought this might be a good time for a Fromel upgrade, so I replaced the caps, diodes & resistors which all came as a kit from Fromel in the USA....still nothing. Could it be the output transformer? Both tubes light up, so does the power light. Everything looks fine but I can't get a sound from it. Has anyone got any ideas?

You should have figured out what you did wrong before more modding.

Carefully look the amp over compared to original schematic you'll find the problem. It is a wiring error or bare wire touching chassis or something it should not be or even cold solder joint.

The 6V6 cathode resistor (R10 470 ohm 2W) is undersized and can burn out

Well all you really know right now from what you posted is that the amp has filament voltage, do you have ducat any of the filter nodes.?

Thanks rock_mumbles. I'll meter the resistor you mentioned and replace it if that's what's needed. I'll let you know if this is the problem. Once again thanks for taking the time to reply.

This is for Steve M.
I actually replaced the valves & speaker about three years ago & it's been fine up to now. I did the Fromel upgrade hoping it might cure the problem but it didn't work. On a brighter note, it should sound awesome for the upgrade when I do get it running again.

When you play thru the amp can you read any ac voltage on pin five of the output tube, if so you have a bad OT, a bad connection to the speaker, or a dead speaker.

If you really want to upgrade that amp, send it to me and I'll do an overhaul and make her a real sweetie... And my pricing is not bad at all, but there are options to choose from. PM me if you're interested.

Here are pics of the last one I did.

Hi again rock_mumbles, I've just had my meter on R10 as you suggested and can't get a reading. I checked all the other power resistors while I was at it & they all seem fine. It looks as though you were spot on. It looks like a trip to Maplins is on the cards. Thanks mate, I'll let you know if it works.
