What to do with a Hot Rod Deluxe?

Post by Bob-I »

The other guitarist in my band has a 12 year old HRD with the typical channel switching issue. About a year ago I replaced the 2-500 ohm resistors raising them off the board a tad. Last week the channel switching stopped again and I found some of the traces lifted. I ran some wire over the traces, super glued it down and soldered to the leads. Last night at the gig the footswitch lights started flashing again.

If this was my amp I'd gut it and build a PTP amp of some sort, but alas it is not.

So is there a real fix for this problem?

Thx in advance

Replacing those dropping resistors with higher-wattage parts, with J-bent leads as long as you have room for (the leads are heatsink, too) is about all there is.

I remember a suggestion to go up a few steps in value as well, to reduce the current through them (I^2*R = W), but do not recall any more specifics.

You could also toss the zeners and plop in a 7815/7915 pair of linear regulators, but that's a bit involved, and may need heatsinks. Add a 10uF cap between the dropping resistor and the linear for stability.

If Music Electronics Forum is up, you might search their archive.

Hope this helps!

Of course I've read that, and followed it but the PCB is too badly damaged.

I have plenty of boards pulled from these amps we modded. If you want to buy a board, PM me, and send a pic of yours, so I could match it up.
