In search of the Grail
Ok: From approximately 2:25 thru 3:25 in this cut;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AvUD114Fts
is about the epitome of how you do it. And Casey I know it's in his hands, but what else is here? Pedal, 808? 50 watt plex with 4 early greenbacks?
Seems like Plexi-67 works for this guy, if you see this Plexi please comment. Otherwise, how do you make that noise?
Yours truely

I need to know this as well! Atleast I have the same R9 Les paul he uses.

In this video, I see a two-rock, an amp that looks cosmetically similar to a dumble, and a couple marshalls?

Re: In search of the Grail
There's some Dumbley thing, the Two Rock, a legit Marshall, and perhaps a Metropolis Marshall clone?
Whatever, it's definitely the tone you heard in your head that made a Wreck drive you to the extent of building one...

Re: In search of the Grail
I do agree that the album cut sounds pretty Marshall-y, but I don't hear that so much in the you tube clip. I guess it is hard tell on a youtube clip, but it seems much different. Possibly more refined, not as raw sounding? I dunno. I am looking for an excuse to start a new build, Ron.Ron Worley wrote:There's some Dubley thing, the Two Rock, a legit Marshall, and perhaps a Metropolis Marshall clone?

first post, first thing to say.
great forum here!!!
joe is using two marshall silver jubilee and two budda superdrive 80 running into two marshall 4x12 cabs with celestion greenbacks and his pedalboard is about 6 foot wide.
i've just seen his video, where he shows and explains all his gear.

Joe describing his live rig. Not completely up to date. The only difference I know of is the Van Weelden has been replaced by a Carol Ann. His super lead is always on, hence the Marshall signature.

He always uses a delay.

According to this tour those are Mojo cabs stuffed with EV-12Ls not greenbacks. And welcome aboard Rimy! In the studio it's anybody's guess really, though I agree on the Marshally signature so I think the Silver Jubilee is in that mix but there's more to it than that.Rimy wrote:first post, first thing to say.

As Zappa might say, "oh there's just so much to worry about, I don't know what to do"

the dvd i've seen was: Joe Bonamassa - Signature, Styles And Techniques from 2006.
or as michael jackson said: people change... *lol*

Re: In search of the Grail
His recent tone or rig is very similar tonally to Eric Johnson's.
In fact his playing style seems to mimic EJ in some of the clips I've seen.
I wonder how much growing up as "Smokin Joe" put pressure on him to perform.
Don't get me wrong, he is a very talented guy, but I wonder how much he really feels the music he is playing.
Sometimes it's not the quantity of notes one plays but the silence between them.

Re: In search of the Grail
Some way or another these threads always turn into a catfight about what a dull and unispired player (your choice of artist) is. I forgot.
Have we got a racist on board who wants to bring up the "white guys can't play the blues" bullshit?
The clip I chose is about tone. That's all. I don't give a shit if he sounds like the freeking Beau Brummels, I like that lead tone.
As far as JB goes, I wish I played as poorly and as uninspired as he does.
I would venture to say that his peers are the best judge of his viability as an artist. Not this bunch.
Sorry I brought it up.

Re: In search of the Grail
About six weeks ago my son and I saw Joe play in Nashville.
Joe's playing was flat out amazing.
About half way into the show Joe announced he was bringing out a Special Guest.
The special guest turned out to be Larry Carlton.
It was great seeing Larry and Joe playing together.
The interesting thing was watching the completely different styles.
Larry seemed to work hard for every note, while the music just seemed to flow out of Joe at blazing speed.
Joe was using his Silver Jubilee, Catagory 5, and two Carol Ann amps.
Larry was playing through a Two Rock Custom Reverb head running into a Catagory 5 cabinet.
I have seen a ton of great players in my life but Joe's playing was some of the best I have ever seen.

Excellent choice! That solo always reminds me of Mark Knopfler, so I guess everyone hears something slightly different in it.
I remember reading that Joe had recorded this during a week or so of downtime in the middle of a tour and the sleeve notes indicate that the amps at least are actually his (European) live rig.
He's using a Marshall 2555 Silver Jubilee, a Marshall 1959 Superlead (or, likely, the Category 5 Superlead with mid-boost which replaced this), a Van Weelden Twinkleland and a Two Rock something-or-other.
The US rig is the same but with the Carol Ann instead of the Van Weelden, with the usual caveat that he's probably changed this all again now, although it has been the same for a couple of tours now!
The basic setup is that the Jubilee is always on and then he can switch in one of the other three at any time to add the appropriate texture.
I can't remember whether the cabs turned out to be Mojo or Alessandro cabs (I'm tending towards the latter) but they definitely all have EVM12Ls in them, each cab being wired as two stereo columns and running two amps.
I'd love to find this particular tone combination myself!
