I'll do a quick check on the OT primary impedence when it gets here but I think a 7408 by any other name is a 6V6GT. Should be a fine center of the shop entertainment system.

I wonder if venting a chassis has much effect on shielding

Great score, dude!
Those are really nice units. Well, almost anything Harmon Kardon is.
I might offer this to my amp-building brethren--look for the old mono office PA style amps by brands like Harmon Kardon (like their DA 35 Commander they're really ugly green, so you don't have to feel bad about parting them out.) and Newcomb. The transformer quality in those things is second to none, and old units like that can be had for cheap, and generally aren't as abused as old guitar or even organ amps.
Build a tweed bassman with an old HK OT or a TW Express with a Newcomb OT, and you may never go back to new stock!

I strongly disagree. That stuff is the worst kind of junk, absolute garbage. It costs you money to dispose of it but I'll do you a favor... I'll throw it in my dumpster for you!rfgordon wrote:I might offer this to my amp-building brethren--look for the old mono office PA style amps by brands like Harmon Kardon (like their DA 35 Commander they're really ugly green, so you don't have to feel bad about parting them out.) and Newcomb. For what it's worth I just picked up Sam's Photofacts on this little guy. According to the H&K collector I got it from this is the first stereo receiver ever made. Dates to 1958. And yes, 6V6GTs are a direct plug and play. Man I wish I still had my 604-8Ks to drive with it. Oh well, I traded those for a les paul, then traded the les paul for a Heritage H-535.......I just can't stand still.

7408
7408 is a beefed up industrial grade 6V6GT, premium priced in NOS these days. I checked out the GE sheet on it (4-63) and it shows slightly higher max design plate voltage (350 vs 315) and lower THD (7% vs 8%) compared with the GE 6V6GT sheet of 3-55.
Not sure these are that significant, but maybe a tad more headroom. They sound very good in MI amps too.

Hey David. Where you bean? Good to see you found your way back to this neck of the woods.David Root wrote:7408 is a beefed up industrial grade 6V6GT, premium priced in NOS these days. I'm still awaiting caps to get this up. I'm going to leave the cans intact and put axials under the chassis and there are some odd values. Waiting on Nichicon because I don't like xicon. The only cap I've ever had blow up in service at under rated voltage. Messy.
