Amp Capture Epiphany

Post by Reeltarded »

I will start with the end. Ignore the rest of what I may say, it is superfluous.

ToneX wins by sound. I you have the MAX version, you are done until the pedal explodes and your computer dies.

This is why: The sound of an amp driven to various levels, with at least the best of them, becomes more and more rich with harmonics and 'attitude' like grind, or growl, or vowelizations. Extreme response to fine mutes. Touch commands more and more colors and textures. We approach tube amp building insanely to coax every bit of that at hopefully lower levels. We approach the settings with a similar idea. Here is the amazing news. All that is in ToneX, even the ToneX One.

I treated all the units like you would. Pick one that is near the gain level I want then increase gain slightly.

WRONG

Amps were captured and the way the sounded going in is what's represented with all TnX controls at 5.

IF YOU USE LOWER THAN 5 GAIN THE SOUND RETAINS THE AMAZING CHARACTER OF A MELTING AMP ALL THE WAY DOWN UNTIL IT STOPS PASSING SIGNAL

Pick a high gain version of what you like and TURN THE GAIN DOWN

There you go. There is the secret to it all. To the mysteries of life. All of them.

We like Dumbles because they do rude things in kind ways. Harmonic blooming, feedback under the fundamental, totally insane vocalizing with some clever muting. Now, imagine that EVERY AMP DID THAT. Imagine if a plexi growled like a Dual Rec as you approached 4 on the knob. It does. You like the face of an 800 but the sweet harmonic blooming from your ODS? Have it. You always wanted a tweed Twin Amp that really works for fusion? Guess what.

For about $200 you can go play guitar and never look back. For about $400 you can drown in amps. For about $1000 you can make amps that never existed and for another $500 and a pair of cabs you can do it at concert volumes.

Neural vs ToneX

ToneX captures things the Neural ignores. The Neural has $1000 worth of $100 worth of effects. The Neural is simpler to deal with if you give up this strange living fidelity. If you want a bunch of things programmed you have to go deep midi and use superior effects and routing with the ToneX. Lexicon time based effects are better than the brick style reverbs on a Neural chip. The action I described above does not translate to Neural. It always sounds a little.. well, it's far less dimensional. I have run a bunch of TnX to Neural captures using the underdrive technique and it just isn't there in the end.

IN SAN IT EEEEEEEEEEE!!

I mean it. ToneX pedals are not liars.

No one else has described this. This is how it works best. Get the full sized pedal or be like me and get both. I use the One for cleans with a special signal chain, and outboard parametric with the big pedal. TIP: Until (I think) Nov 5th if you buy the big pedal you get ODS legends and some stomp box package for free. $350 @ Sweetwater and big pedal always includes MAX capture set. (1100 captures)

No kidding

I now have one of the ToneX Pedals and two of the ToneX Ones...

Complicated setups are actually very simple. The two small ones can be set up as amps for a stereo rig, while the big one is used for captured pedal chains, with modulation effects in between. My El Capistan is great here... It takes a mono signal and splits it into stereo chains feeding the two Ones... So nice. And with the ToneX Capture I can use my amps and pedal chains.

I'm still amazed at what the can get out of such small boxes.

You would REALLY like the thing I am talking about. Someone shared captures of his Suhr '67 I believe are the highest training level that sound fantastic straight up, but the dirtiest ones with the gain moderated at some volume just kill all amplifiers. It feels surreal because it is. This thing is a dream.

As a side note a single One is stereo output through TRS and the reverb doesn't suck.

No different than using mics, if you record and time-alignment with multiple amps is a problem you have to do it manually or with a proper plugin. The Tonex latency is tiny, but variable between captures.

So Miles, do you still need capital to fund your project?

Maybe not, because it sounds like the lower cost choice is the way you're going.
