Larry Carlton played a Vox last night

Post by brewdude »

I saw Larry Carlton at the Blue Note in Napa last night... First time seeing him play—wow!

It was an amazing performance and the sound was great. His tone was fantastic and at the perfect volume in this small room and sat perfectly in the mix with drums, bass, keys, trombone, and tenor sax. It was refreshing to see a live performance in a room this small be such a comfortable volume level and be very dynamic. He was playing a Vox amp and a pedal board which included a Dumble sounding BlueLine Overdrive.

He played a bunch of Steely Dan songs, but I preferred the portion of the show that was not from Steely Dan. Unfortunately, I not familiar enough with his catalogue to know the titles.

It was a great experience.

Cool! Hey, look out for my friend Jeffrey McFarland in Napa. He plays cello, but also sitar and a variety of stringed instruments, with a looper. Say hi from Aaron if you see him!

...and a nice guy. Apparently he is/was also a paramedic near Franklin, Tennessee (yes, same guy, not the 'other' Larry Carlton).

I wanted to catch that, either there or at Yoshi's! But yeah, I wasn't too anxious because I saw that the focus was from his work with Steely Dan. He's definitely one of the guys I want to see before it's too late.

A decent enough D-Style pedal through a great pedal-platform amp should sound pretty close to what he can coax out of a real D-Style amp, so I'm not surprised. Have you seen those YouTube videos where they blind test a D-pedal and an authentic Dumble? They do sound slightly different and fundamentally the same but I sure couldn't tell which was which. They both sounded great to my ears.
