Skeeters, gators, tornados & hurricans, & everything mentioned in Warren Zevon's "Play It All Night Long."

And on the other hand, all the good stuff mentioned in "That's What I Like About The South", pecan pies, pralines & peaches too. Not to mention real Southern hospitality & those gorgeous gals hiding in far corners of Mississippi & other spots.

As Faulkner said, it's a place where the past isn't dead, hell it ain't even past.

Good for visitin' even if you don't move there. Kind of like some mildly crazy relative. ;)

Power co says 2 days till power comes back. Kids are sitting in the car charging their iphones. Luckily the lake hasn't froze over so i can gather buckets of water to flush the toilets. At least the fireplace is warm. Oh boy...

Leo,
It sounds like we almost have you won over. Y'all are welcome to come down ( Just leave Warren Zevon and Neal Young up north with their prejudiced and bigoted attitudes  ) But let me warn you , the temp is dropping (52 Degrees F. ) and wear your highwater pants 'cause it's been raining all day like a cow pissin' on a flat rock .
I bought a pair of shoes from a drug dealer the other day. I dunno what he laced them with but I’ve been tripping all day,

HA! One of my fave expressions.

I've been very well taken care of south of the Mason-Dixon line. Seen a couple of very dodgy things go on too, but rarely thank hevvins.

Can't control Neil, & though Warren's one of my all time favorite songwriters he's long since kaput. I s'pose you'd have to regard Faulkner, Mark Twain & lots of other Southern writers to be prejudiced too. My POV is they're they continue the Jonathan Swift attitude which is a good thing so let's call them "arch" instead - in their way they point out what needs to be improved. But that goes anywhere.

Meanwhile I'm developing a taste for Drive By Truckers. 'Bout time.

Leo,
I just re-read my post from yesterday and maybe it came off differently from what I intended. Let me try to explain.
I was merely trying to point out the irony of Misters Zevon and Young pre-judging and stereo-typing all Southerners (or in the case of Mr. Young, all Southern MEN) as being prejudiced bigoted racists when in fact the number when narrowed down to voting aged white protestant males clearly hovers at around 35%. When you factor in ALL southern men of ALL races and creeds the bigot factor drops substantially. Just because a few cousin - loving good ol' boys get tanked up and rowdy and set fire to a few wooden structures that just HAPPEN to resemble a cross all the while dressed in a Southern version of a TOGA and wearing a dunce hat.....WELL! Let's not jump to any conclusions here, OKAY?

All tounge -in -cheek.

"We thought Neil was shooting all the ducks in order to kill one or two," said Ronnie Van Zant at the time [Rolling Stone, 1974].

This is the way many people reacted, but I think Young's "Southern Man" refers specifically to those who are stuck in the past, like the "Old folks tied in white ropes" in his less well-known "Alabama" (the other Neil Young tune Van Zant was responding to).

As a 35 yr southern resident, I've found many more racist blacks than whites. Now I hear whites complaining more about the undocumented democrats flooding the state/country.

Man that sucks John.

Ha!, the kids have to be connected!
Really a total culture shift from when we were kids with 8 tracks.

Before I married my wife, there was a cold spell and the power went out at her house for five days. Mind you, we live in the city.
Once the inside of the house is as cold as the outside, it's time to leave.
We had boarded her two dogs at our vet and were in the process of leaving the house when the power came back on.....
The neighborhood utilities are underground, but it never fails in a wind storm the power will definitely flicker if not go out completely.

There must be an above ground feed that gets hit every time......

I had an aunt in Georgia.
She used to ask me if I wanted any bald peanuts.

I wondered what the heck they were until it dawned on me, she was saying boiled peanuts.
Se had a pretty good drawl.

My mother in law is in Bonita Springs, FL.

Lows in the 70's, but not sure I could handle the humidity.

The upper East coast was in the 70's last week.

Now snow and ice.

Never a dull moment.
:D

Yeah Tom we made out ok, power ended up being out 16 hours, just a memory now. We do a lot of camping down there so we had all kinds of camp gear for cooking and light.

Bigger surprise was returning home last night to a pile of snow at the end of the driveway about 3 feet high extending about 10 feet into the cul de sac. Must be a new plow driver and pushed all of the 8 inches of snow from the cul de sac to my driveway. Bastid, took me an hour with a big snow blower just to clean the mess. I hate winter and shitty plow drivers.

Nice to come home to.

I've seen cars totally buried from the nice plow drivers.
